The cool season grasses that grow in our climate need frequent mowing. A proper weekly mowing routine is best for cutting these grasses from May to August, and some lawns can move to a bi-weekly mowing schedule for September and October when lawn growth slows down.

The short answer, probably higher than you think. Here in Calgary, we have cool season grasses which are a mix of Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye Grass, and Red Fescue. These grasses need to be left longer to thrive during the growing season. Your lawn should not be cut shorter than 2.5 inches from May to September, and 3 inches is even better! The only time to cut your lawn shorter than this, is the first cut of the year after the snow has melted and the last cut or 2 of the season before the grass goes dormant for the winter.

Residential lawns are not the same as golf course greens, and they need to be maintained a different way. Mowing your lawn shorter than 2.5 inches is not recommended for our residential lawns here in Calgary for several reasons.

Mowing your grass too short:

• Discourages deep root growth, which makes it more difficult for your lawn to tolerate the summer droughts and long winters.
• Requires more watering, which promotes disease/fungus growth and costs you more money.
• Allows weeds like dandelions and clover to take over your lawn.
